UK Gambling Deposit Limits Change on 30 September 2026

3 min readBy Bonus RushSeptember 7, 2026

New UK gambling deposit-limit rules take effect on 30 September 2026, bringing a consistent definition to an important account-control tool. The update standardises how operators offer and describe customer-set account limits.

What changes on 30 September 2026?

The Gambling Commission says operators must:

  • Make gross deposit limits available.
  • Use the name deposit limit for that type of control alone.
  • Give gross deposit limits at least the same prominence as other financial-limit options.
  • Apply gross deposit limits over fixed periods. Other limit types may use fixed or rolling periods.

The deadline was originally 30 June. In May, the regulator extended it to September to allow more time for technical development following industry feedback. See the Commission's deadline announcement.

Why the regulator is changing the terminology

Different interpretations of deposit limits have made the same label mean different things across gambling businesses. The Commission's stated aim is greater consistency and clearer customer understanding. The regulator intends the changes to make account controls easier to interpret. The regulator explains its reasoning in the consultation response.

Gross vs net deposit limits: what is the difference?

A gross deposit limit measures the total money deposited during the relevant period. Withdrawals do not reduce that deposit total.

A net deposit limit measures deposits minus withdrawals during the relevant period. Operators may continue to offer this alongside gross limits, as well as other controls such as stake and loss limits.

The distinction matters because an identical pound amount can describe different measurements. A deposit figure is not the same as money lost: it records transfers into an account, while a loss measure concerns gambling outcomes. The Commission sets out these distinctions in its financial-limit definitions.

Who do the deposit-limit rules cover?

The relevant market is Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. The Commission licenses remote gambling businesses serving consumers there, including businesses based overseas. These requirements apply to that regulated market. The remote-sector guidance explains that licensing scope. RTS 12 excludes subscription lotteries.

What happens to existing financial limits?

Existing accounts using another available limit type do not have to be automatically converted to gross deposit limits. The Commission says customers may retain those controls while the operator continues to offer them.

The regulator also distinguishes fixed and rolling periods. Gross limits must use fixed periods, while other financial limits may use either approach. Operators should make the reset timing clear. These points are explained in its updated customer-led tools guidance.

Questions about the September changes

Is there one mandatory deposit amount for everyone?

No. RTS 12 concerns customer-set financial-limit facilities; it does not prescribe one universal pound amount for every customer.

Which periods must be available?

The standard requires options covering 24 hours, seven days and one month. Where limits run simultaneously, the most restrictive applies.

What protections apply when a limit changes?

Customer-requested increases require at least a 24-hour cooling-off period and subsequent confirmation. Reductions must normally take effect immediately, except where technical failures prevent that. These requirements appear in the full RTS 12 wording.
